To make the Verbose startup pref stick, I think I used
"Cocktail," a great app that I didn't register, since I didn't
think I'd need much of its $15 functionality.  There must be a way to hack
an .ini, but the Jekyll-Hyde quality of OSX at boot time (half BSD, half
Apple) scares me.
