Word is probably preloading at boot time taking some memory that could be
used for other things. OpenOffice has an option to do the same thing.

I don't consider load time to be a big deal. I tend to open the word
processor or spreadsheet and leave it open for quite a while. I did notice
that v1.1 of OpenOffice opens faster than 1.0.

I just did a test on my Win2K box. I did a reboot and waited for everything
to settle down. I started the OpenOffice word processor. It opened and was
ready to use in 7 seconds. I closed it, waited 30 seconds and started MS
Word 97. It opened and was ready to use in 4 seconds. The biggest
difference was that MS Word's splash screen appears instantly and the
splash screen for OpenOffice didn't appear until 4 seconds had passed. This
test was on an Athlon XP 1900+ system with 1GB of memory.
