subject: AC`97 and MIC problem

Hi All,

I have a Gigabyte 7ZXE motherboard that doesn't seem to generate any MIC
input (onboard MIC). MIC device is selected in the AC'97 config menus OK,
but the system doesn't respond with MIC input tests. I was trying to setup
MS NetMeeting 3.01 (it has a convenient microphone/recording test built-in)
when I discovered this.

As far as I know, the system USED to work ok with a MIC. But there is no
other soundcard onboard. However, a SounBlaster Pro entry in the
DeviceMangler looks suspicious!

System is Win98SE.

I have visited the Avance site (which now points visitors to a RealTek
site) and downloaded the latest AC'97 drivers (version 5.10.5420).
Installed OK, but there is no difference.

MEANWHILE.. I visited the Gigabyte mobo site and notice that they have
atleast 2 RealTek "audio" driver downloads available. But the
version numbers do not jive with the single file at RealTek. Gigabyte
has:

Audio Driver : Realtek WHQL v3.49 [Win9x, WinMe, Win2000, WinXP, WinNT 5.28 MB]

and,

Audio Driver : Realtek v3.48 [Win9x, WinMe, Win2000, WinXP, WinNT]

WHAT is the diff between the two, and would I need BOTH?

There is also a "Chipset" driver:

Chipset Driver : VIA 4in1 v4.48 [Win9x, WinMe, Win2000, WinXP, WinNT]

Any suggestions to getting the MIC sub-system working?

I figured that maybe I should simply get a basic SB 16 PCI sound card that
has it's own MIC input.

...August
