Because the i/o throughput of the rpi SD card interface is worse than that
of a USB attached hard drive. The read throughput is 50% better, not done
a write test, but suspect SD card will performa even worse. Of course the
best answer is a USB attached SSD. An other reason is for capacity. I have
an RPI backup server with a 2Tb USB HDD for doing network backups of other
stuff.
