The reason is simple. It's a lot easier and cheaper to add a
voltmeter to the circuit than an ammeter.

And as long as there is an extra guage on the panel, most idiots
will be happy.

Remember the cars that came out with a clock pretending to be a
tacho, by matching the speedo in its size and placement? And the
ones that disguised their idiot lights as extra guages?
