subject: problems with Zmodem?

JS> Boo...not good. Can you give me some info regarding your setup, modem,
and
JS> things of that nature? Perhaps we can collectively help figure out what
th
JS> problem is. I have downloaded and uploaded dozens upon dozens of files
wit
JS> TMand never had even a bobble out of it, let alone a true failure.
I really don't have a lot of info to give. If I remember right, the
telemate setup is the default and the init string just loads out of
modem memory. It's the same string I've used with numerous comm
programs.
In the past year I have tried Telemate about 3 or 4 times. Never really
been quite satisfied with certain aspects of it but since it was on sale
I decided to give it another shot. During those other tries I had never
had any problems with DLing, so when I had problems this time I figured
it was with the BBS. They use an RPI modem and the line tends to have
noise spurts so I really didn't worry too much.
I tried a couple of times to DL it and it always aborted the transfer
after a minute or so. Sometimes the line was a bit noisy and since they
use an RPI modem without error correction the connection is more
susceptable to noise so I figured I'd just call another time and get it.
On the fifth call (third day) to it I got rather iritated about not
being able to get the file so I tried repeatedly. I must have tried 4
times with and without zmodem resumption and it always aborted the
transfer with just a few K left. I thought maybe there was something odd
about Zmodem so I tried it with Xmodem/CRC. Well, it aborted too, but I
wasn't too surprised because I've never had too good of luck with
Xmodem. So I went back to Zmodem. DLed it again with resume and it
picked up in the middle like it was supposed to and it got to the last
1K and just froze. It finally timed out and returned me to the terminal
and I saw that the BBS prompt was already waiting for me. I tried it two
more times and it happened again.
At this point, I figured that maybe the BBS was having problems reading
the file or something and just wasn't able to send it. I left a note
for the sysop to check into it and logged off. When I logged off it
showed that I had DLed 3 files and had decremented my UL/DL ratio
accordingly!
That irirated me! I immediately went back into the phone directory and
started to call but on impulse I exited Telemate and tried another comm
program that I had installed and called and it picked up that last 1K
on the very first try.
Up to the point where I was able to get it with the other comm program I
had just assumed it was a problem with the board. Very iritating, but
on their end and not mine. But when I called using a different comm
program (my third call that night, the other two with Telemate) less
than a minute after I had hung up and was able to get it without any
problem, I figured that although the source of the problem was still
probably on the BBS, it was at least effecting Telemate.
I'm sure that the source of the problem was on the BBS but I don't know
why it effected Telemate and not the other one. Maybe it was just luck.
The only thing I could think of that made sense was that Telemate missed
the last packet and it waited to time out. In the meantime, the BBS
software waited didn't get a NACK from me and assumed it had transfered
successfully. By the time Telemate did get around to informing the BBS
that it hadn't received the last packet, the BBS had already exited it's
Zmodem transfer and was back at the prompt.
Or maybe they are using some odd Zmodem and it does the last packets a
little differently.
Of course, all of that is speculation. Maybe it was just a coincidence
or bad luck or something. All I know is I lost 60 DL credits and only
have 150 credits left unless I can find something to upload that the
sysop would find interesting and give me credit for it. (He doesn't
accept everything.)
JS> Could this be a setup problem perhaps? Dunno...and since you did not
JS> system data regarding, I'm just taking a shot in the dark.
No, I didn't post any setup info. I figured Telemate 4.12 had been
around for so long that if there had been any problems at all somebody
else would know about them.
I'm using the straight setup defaults. My init strings just pull the
config out of the modems memory. Those same settings have worked with
every other comm program I've tried. Running it from DOS of course.
I don't know. I'll try it again with a couple of other boards
but I doubt if I'll have any problems.
