For roughly the same money, Radio Shack has a specialized tester 
that simply plugs into the outlet.  If the LED lights up green, it 
is good.  If it lights up red, it is reversed.  If it lights up 
yellow, you have AC present.  By the way, a second source for that 
tester would be the local AT&T Phone Mate store or its equivalent.
