Clone crash repair and aftermarket parts are a big business. So far, the
only attempts by auto makers have been simple mechanical incompatibilities
between the different OEM, not the inclusion of electronic interlocks
subject to DMCA. Imagine something like brake pads with a small high ohm
resistor wired onto the pad where the car's electronics sense the
resistance value (i.e. a supposed "handshake signature") and the
car won't start unless it is fitted with OEM pads. The same sort of scheme
could be used for water pumps, alternators, batteries etc.
