subject: Try to install Maximus on linux

GKA> Hello All!

Hello, Gert....

GKA> I have trying to install Maximus linux version from
GKA> both zip unpacked and cvs doing to get the latest
 GKA> updates.

Good.

GKA> It is my meaning on having max to run behind my
GKA> mailers for some filelist and filearea doing.
GKA> Then I have my old file areas as /home/ftp/pub/fido/
GKA> and after change over to all now is linux doing the
GKA> new incoming files is on /home/kofo/ftp/ so there is 2
GKA> places where my files is.

Ok....

 GKA> I have tried to run ./configure --
GKA> prefix=/home/kofo/max and then make + make install

Ok.
GKA> But when it trying to install it says it not can doing this.

(1) I assume you have the proper permissions on the file tree at
/home/kofo/max for the account you are running make on.

(2) If I remember right, you are going to need to pass an argument to
make. From memory "make all" or "make max squish
sqafix" are the needed parameters. Otherwise, make will have nothing
to do. Ah.... After quickly skimming the master Make file again, need
"make build".....

(3) You may want to run "make clean" first.

(4) You may have to run the "make build" or equivalent two or
three times before everything succeedes. If I remember right, there is a
library we have out of order in the make that gets missed in the first
round for some linking, and gets picked up in the second round. Also, the
first round you need to compile both max and squish before all the
libraries get compiled. Sqafix is also able to be made from the make file,
but that was an add on and is not well documented. I think "make
build" builds all three at this time.

GKA> Here is so shall I just run it as root or local user
GKA> where my system run as fast local use and when it is
GKA> done after make install setup my file areas in
GKA> filearea.ctl and go throu the other ctl files and set
GKA> thenm up to they use the old files places or the new
GKA> files path or is there a way to make it to max both se
GKA> the new files and old files together.

The ./configure script documents that it needs to run as root. I run max
on its own user account. Don't forget that the first time you run max you
need to use the command line option to generate the user database. This is
a one time option.

As to file areas, you can set up old areas and new areas -- each as their
own area. [Sort of how I handle tophat.darktech.org for my
"archived" file and message areas.] There is a way to have files
in one area show up in another area for the BBS via paths specified in the
files.bbs for the area. I normally don't use that, and haven't tried it on
the Linux version of Max.

Note that you will need to watch case of file and path names in max control
files. We tried to make Max case insensative or force case where it made
sense for the linux version. This was because the original code ran in
enviornments where the file system is not case sensitive, and Max sometimes
wasn't consistent on case. Linux is case sensitive, and this sometimes
bites, especially in the control file setup. Also, the issue of / vs \
needs to be watched. I believe I have been using fully specified paths and
not much relative paths in the Linux version to get around some issues.

GKA> Then just run silt when this is done.
GKA> I have setup and using binkd as mailer.

Take care.....
