I spoke to Mac, and the general belief at my Firm is, use U.S.O. and no 
stars, do not use big block fonts for those letters, and maybe put 
United States Open right below it, I mean immediately below it.  Best 
bet is to avoid the letters USO altogether.  Or maybe do a:

U. S. O.
n    t   p
i     a  e
t     t   n
e    e
d    s

Or something like that.  Do that and maybe the lawyers won't bother you.
