Well, there's always PCBRIDGE. You'll need a dedicated computer at each end,
but a 286 should do. Since it's a bridge, it will work with any LAN software.
I haven't tried PCBRIDGE with a modem myself, but I have tried it over a
serial link. According to the docs, it works with a modem as well.
