What a superlative insight that I totally overlooked in my despair!

Hell, I've spent all these years building my academic contacts, and
haven't (because of danged pride) availed myself of them. What's to
stop me from sending a copy of Janus to a university press with a
cover letter and a few letters of support (including one from the
professor who selected it as a required text!) ... stating that POD
simply doesn't have the oomph to keep the book in the classes.

It's worth a shot.
