You may have to look at the actual XF86Config file itself ( /etc/X11 ) and 
then edit it by hand.....sounds like the font paths aren't set correctly or 
the fonts haven't been installed.  You can also do some reading on the 
XF86Config parameters/arguments etc by typing in "man XF86Config" at the 
linux command line.
