Sounds like you have not given new user defaults msg/files access flags in 
config->bbs->newuserdefaults any access to at least one msg and file area
just click on all on for msg/files flags and your new users should be able to 
logon allright.. the logoff thing may be related, bring up your user editor 
and chk access flags for your user record.. under attributes/flags button

Colors.ctl should have been in the full install archive you downloaded in the 
\adept\system dir...
