I think the intention is to drive the servo that loads tape round the head
and switches the tranmission (FF/REW/PLAY need different mechanical
configurations
etc.

I think newer VCRs may be using the same motor that drives the captans etc
to switch the transmission (takes a whole mess of annoying little plastic
gears)  I seem to recall my answering machine uses a similar setup.
reversing the motor changes gears, loads and unloads the heads and pinch
roller, running it forwards drives the tape.
