Hello to All,
Am attempting to join 2 computers separated by 3 feet of 10base UTP patch
cabling with RJ45 plugs together.
1. is 486DX33 with ISA generic Ethernet Card
2. is 586VX server with PCI generic Ethernet card; server runs both
EIDE and SCSI and is connected to Internet via USR 33.6
both going through a "hub".
Diagnostics indicate a physical connection, multi-meter - all is OK
Software does not communicate intelligibly, but does generate a lot of
'shared' faults.
Cards show as RealTek, and the drivers are mounted.
Both computers request Domain Name Servers as part of the startup process,
even though they are supposed to be local. I have setup as a WINS and tested
OK, this is now disabled; but will be enabled again once the local side
is sorted out.
The reason for the WINS is that half the organisation is in Gloucester and
our half is in Liverpool. We tested the WINS through to the engineering
server at Jodrell Bank.
I feel that it is a simple configuration problem, but the paperwork is
limited in this area.
