I wasn't yet born in the 30s, so I can't speak from personal experience.
But, if I recall my history correctly, a lot of those taxes got created
as a way to fund the programs that kept a lot of other people alive
during the Great Depression. I have talked with people who were of
voting age during the thirties. Heck, I have elderly friends who were
in their thirties during part of the thirties and remember them quite
well. They inform me that not only did those programs created from the
taxes help keep people alive, but the majority of the population
strongly supported the taxes, and the president (FDR, I'm sure you
recall) who created the taxes and the programs they made possible. I'm
sure you will also remember that the Republican Party was so threatened
by FDR's popularity among the people that they prompty created a bill
when he died limiting the presidency to two terms, to make sure that
another popular democratic president couldn't get elected four or more
times by the people.
