Regurgitating what Bonnie Goodwin said to Garth Robinson on 11-24-96 11:46
Gidday Bonnie....
BG> You make some excellent points about loudness. The highest I've ever
BG> subjected myself to intentionally was 130dB of pink noise for room
BG> tuning. That was to stress test a finished sound system to make sure
BG> it wasn't going to fall apart at more reasonable and usable frequencies
BG> (it was a 1300 seat church locally).
Thankyou Bonnie. It would appear to me that you work at the "top-end"
of the sound system market. Most of my stuff is very average mobile PA
type stuff, small theatre, fairs, halls, promo's etc. Most of my gear
is "home-brew" and very much budget. When I finally get around to
upgrading this 'puter, I wanna have a serious play with sound editing
etc. Maybe even "cleaning" up some stuff from my way-back-stack.
BG> Now that is damned loud, unreasonably loud, uselessly loud.
S'cuse my higorance Bonnie, but how does the use of pink noise assist
with room tuning. The few installations that I've had anything to do
with, I've just used a sweep generator to help locate room resonances,
armed with a pocket full of screws and nails, oh yes, and a tube of
yahoo glue! ;-)
-> SD> 125db really isn't that much in car audio competition. There's
-> SD> some vehicles here in the US that can hit 155db and higher.
BG> OK, I'm impressed, if you want me to be. So now I can hear your car
BG> coming from 6 city blocks away rather than 3. As you probably already
Hmm, I somehow fail to appreciate 155db in an vehicle situation, I
didn't think that mobile electronics had gotten that far, but then
again, I am in little ol' New Zealand.
BG> know, auto stereo is covered elsewhere, where such items of fact will
BG> get comments of praise rather than wrath like here. (Not you Garth),
BG> that's intended to the original poster. As you put it..
I confess I was the original poster of the "loud or what" thread, but
my point of the discussion was more to do with the physiological
effect of high levels of sound, rather than that of whether it was in
vehicles or not. My apologies to those annoyed with the posting,
besides we don't get the "car-audio" (or whatever) echo here in NZ.
The TV program I was watching just happened to be about vehicle sound
systems etc.
BG> stupid. Checking drivers in a big system by sticking my ear up to the
BG> cabinet in full operation trying to find that buzz of a bad speaker to
Yupp, been there got the Tee shirt, hehe, even a couple of buggered
drivers to prove it. ;-) I guess you've tried sussing which driver is
crapping amongst a column of eight or so. Mind you, a can of spray
laquer has gotten me out of the proverbial before today.
BG> I've noticed government people with SPL meters and a number of
BG> concerts locally, one for an outdoor venue that had been operating for
BG> years before a housing development sprung up almost next door to it,
BG> and now the people in the houses are bitching about the volume, so the
BG> venue will probably have to end up moving because of it from it's
BG> current Cal Expo spot.
Hehe, I've noticed exactly the same senareo near our place, which
happens to be near a fully operational airforce base.
BG> A device known as an "acoustical laser" was invented by them and could
BG> have been a major factor if used in against a large group of men on a
BG> battlefield. Basically it is two very high powered ultrasonic drivers
BG> operated so that it would hetrodyne a beat frequency in a subsonic
BG> range that would cause internal hemmoraging in the body because of the
BG> internal parts rubbing against each other due to the vibration.
Ok, I can see how that works. I wonder why it was never
developed/used?, maybe it was "backfiring" ;-}
BG> I used 14Hz to great effectiveness during a production of Dracula we
What were you using for a signal source?
BG> stage prop couch in the set, the lights flicker for a second, a
BG> flashpot goes off and up pops Dracula.
Very few stage shows that I have anything to do with use pyrotechs,
mainly because such stringent regulations in our country as to there
use. Some was used in the rear (rocket) of a four metre (11-12 foot)
Batman car. The red flame/smoke lasted about 4-5 seconds. These
"charges" were to be kept in a safe, which was in a steel lined
concrete block "bunker"! Hell, there was barely enough to blow yer
nose, let alone a stage/prop. ;-}
