WC> I built one of those.
WC> Quaker oatmeal box coil form.
WC> Real solderable tin foil peeled from gum wrappers
 WC> for the capacitor.
WC> Enamaled wire coil on the form with one band stripped of insulation
WC> and tuned by a sliding contact.
WC> Crystal holder made of some small piece of rearranged copper
 WC> tubing and gallina Xtal.
WC> Early 60's in the Boy Scouts.

Some people used to make their own galena (lead sulphide) by
heating powdered lead and sulphur. But I'm told the natural stuff
was better as it has to form crystals.

And it was said to be possible to make a detector with a blue
Gilette blade for a safety razor and the graphite stick from a
pencil. I believe that's how the POWs in Germany were doing it
during WW2. Pencils and razor blades were fairly common in the
Red Cross packages.

But where did they get their earphones??????
