Fake IP's are only for internal use which might be OK for the NIC
and a Proxy Server but the modem needs a real one _or_ have one 
assigned dynamically by your provider.  They should also give you a 
DNS host that you can plugin.  You also might have to put in a Gateway
(your provider) but it's been a long time since I've done it with 
modems.
