Our NT expert replies:
He needs to manually define a DNS server in the TCP/IP configuration.
many terminal servers won't assign that via PPP.
To do this, you just have to goto the network control panel, and select
protocols, then click on TCP/IP that is bound to the Remote networking
adaptor, and then select properties. One of the tabs at the top of that
window will say DNS. From there, just define a pair of DNS servers. If
he dosn't know who the servers are, he'll have to ask his ISP.
I will also add to his comments that "phony" IP address may be normal in
certain situations for your own address and that of your gateway/router. In
these cases, "0.0.0.0" is a magic flag for "get this address dynamically."
I should also explain that PPP server giving you DNS addresses is a
non-standard Microsoft extension, and it only works if the server is also NT.
In most cases, you do have to enter this information manually based on what
your ISP tells you to do. On the other hand, NT and 95 use the same
extension to the PPP negotiation, so your NT client should work if your ISP
supports this function for 95 clients.
