It's been a long time since I played with that....  Are you seeing other
control information?  I think it's all tied into one of the control files. 
Ah, in the default Matrix.ctl (included in the standard Max.ctl file),
there is a line "Message show seenby to "..... 
Change level to Hidden, recompile the control files (siltp -x max), and
that should do it.
