The following notes about WinRadio merit a mention:
* the miniaturization of a wide-band scanner *and* a shortwave
receiver on a single-slot standard PC card - a world-first, to the
best of my knowledge. And "firsts" are always worthy of a special
mention; horn-blowing and hoopla.
* WinRadio succeeds in defeating PC generated noise, and made it
possible, to put a wide-band receiver inside a PC - another first!
* a unique user interface that is powerful, intuitive and simple to
use, designed for Windows users. Not a first, but still all class.
* the overall package is attractive and immediately useable by
newcomers as well as pro's.
* with its universal appeal (and yes, some of it *is* thanks to "marketing
hype"), WinRadio attempts to bring the entire spectrum of hobby radio
down to the PC-user masses, a perhaps rather Quixotic attempt, nevertheless
one that aims at enlarging the number of radio amateurs - at the time when
their numbers are diminishing and when radio is decidedly going out of
fashion
