(1)  Yes, the MEX files I believe need to be compiled.  (With Maid?)

(2)  You may have some directory issues.  Is the case proper in all
locations?  where is the m subdirectory relative to where you are running
and where max things things are running?  There were some paths I believe I
put the full path in instead of a relative path to get things working on my
copy under linux.  I don't know if all of those issues have been worked out
in the code.
