Turns out these mysterious netmails were actually intended for a newsgroup alttest that I have set up in Irex as a gate. I have other newsgroups gated that are working fine and I didn't see where I mucked this one up. Anyway, I just deleted it as I don't want or need it. And since doing so I haven't had any issues with unwanted netmail.
