Charles, in many cases, laws are passed because people refuse to do what
they ought to do. Merchants should not sell cigarettes to children. If
most merchants refused to sell cigarettes to children, this law would
not have been passed. Most merchants would rather get the money from
selling the cigarettes to children than protect the children. Hence,
the law.
And listen, I have been acutely aware for years now that almost all
stores sell cigarettes to children. I do not like the idea of a lot of
laws regulating my life. I like even less the idea of people harming
other people. Selling cigarettes to children *is* harming others.
Where people voluntarily do what is right, there is no need for laws.
Where people refuse to voluntarily do what is right, there *is* a need
for laws. When enough people refuse to voluntarily do what is right,
the way is open for a dictatorship. I am *very* afraid that our nation
is rapidly approaching that point. But, even with that danger, there
has to be either voluntary courtesy, respect, and concern for others; or
legally mandated manners and concern. We cannot afford anarchy; for in
anarchy, no-one but a personally powerful few have any freedom.
Regretfully, the desire for money, and for a quick high seem to be
over-riding a basic concern for the welfare of others.
