To not full-quote Jan's posting, just a short addition here:

Of course you can do all that on a MAC and any other unixoide OS also.
The needed dd command is also available there, but just foget to do all
that in the desktop environment. That's a job for the command line -- the
heart of you MAC.

Just be careful when it comes to writing to /dev/disk1 or such disks to
not overwrite your MAC's main data disk.
