subject: First Scuba lesson :(

Hi John,
I just wanted to comment on your advice. JC> Subject: First Scuba
lesson :(

JC> GJ> Hello ALL!

JC> GJ> I just got back from Cancun about three weeks ago. I signed up for

JC> > Scuba lesson to be followed by a dive on a reef in about `30 of water.

JC> > signed up through the hotel were I was staying. When I arrived at the
JC> > dive shop the owner told me that the water was rough and the current
JC> > high and that I might want to consider going the following day which I
JC> > did. That day I was told that it was not as bad but still rough so I
JC> > decided to go ahead otherwise I was going to forfeit the $70 I had
JC> > already paid per the contract. So after a little theory and repeated
JC> > warnings about how it was going to be very rough out there today me and
JC> > and two others proceeded to the checkout tank and put on the gear.
fter
JC> > a few minutes I was not very comfortable with the progress I was making

JC> > really didn't think under the circumstances that I would be able to
JC> > continue and didn't want to cause problems for her and the other two
JC> > students. The checkout in the tank was less than 20 min. I don't think
JC> > that 20 min. Scuba instruction is sufficient to dive a reef in `30 feet
JC> > of water under even ideal conditions. Am I correct in assuming this or
JC> > am I just a Wimp.

JC> :_______^^^^^^^^___said the following________^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^_____:
JC> I would agree with you, if you are not comfortable with the
JC> instruction and not comfortable with the conditions of the dive, water,
JC> and dive site, then my understanding is you should not dive! Nothing is
JC> worse you diving and running into problems and then have a bad experience
JC> of the dive and base that on all dives, I have had some good ones that I
JC> remember and also so I learned from and try to avoid next time if similar
JC> situation. I hope that I was not to firm in my reply to this, but in my
JC> years of diving I have found the well planned out dives and dive sites
re
JC> better than the 'spur of the moment'! It is tempting but take the plunge
JC> slowly and you will feel comfortable and enjoy the sport.
You are quite right about feeling comfortable being very important in
enjoying the sport. I too had a bad experience with my first dive here
in California. My wetsuit was fitted improperly, My BC was too tight
and my Instructor would not go down the anchor line with me on the first
dive, I became ancious and aborted the dive and was out the money for
the Certification dives on that trip But my trip to Hawaii was worth
it's weight in gold to me. The instructor went down the anchor line
with me on the first dive and got me to slow down my breathing since I
was nervous of course. and so when I went on a trip to Hawaii a year
later the water was rough surge on the return to the beach it was a hard
swim but it paid off because of the certifying instructor's proper
teaching I did not panic, I stopped and thought of what to do.

I enjoy your pictures it reminds me of a T-shirt here in the Monterey
area where there is a diver who is spear fishing and he's face to face
with a great white just as he has a fish speared and the caption reads
on the divers face," Oh shit!"(It's a kind of a have to see it to
appreciate it).
