Unfortunately the ring/s carry on through the modem to cause the voice phone 
to ring as well.
I used to have my bbs and voice phone on the same line using the distinctive 
ring, the only problem was that I had to turn the ringer off in order to get 
any sleep.
What I did was turn the ringer off and plug the answering machine in with a 
message about having people announce themselves.
This way the modem only answered the data/fax calls while not picking up the 
line for the voice calls which of course the answering machine answered after 
2 rings.  People then yelled to pick up the line.
A bit of a kludge but it worked and solved the problem of the ringer 
continually going.
