Sounds like you are infected with the notorious CONCEPT virus.  Check the
[T]ools/[O]ptions/[M]acro command sequence and check the first 2 macros you
see; if you don't recognize what you see, get a copy of F-MACROW.EXE from
the guy who writes F-PROT to disinfect your system and check all those data
disks with any MS-Word or Excel files on them.
What you describe above is precisely what occurs with a CONCEPT infection.
The macro-virus' first action is to replicate itself into your NORMAL.DOT
template; thereafter, every document you create or open, will be infected,
as well.  The virus itself is relatively benign, but it's tough to get rid
of if you're in an environment where a lot of disk swapping occurs.
