Re: National Geographic, yes; every word of text, including ads, every cover
and photograph and map issued from Dec 1888 through Dec 1996. Printable.
I found National Geographic for $219.95 in Chapters Bookstore; cost is U.S.
$199.95 if you call 1-800-881-9919 and ask for NGR-112671 ... prices good to
Sep 31, 1998. As for the Project Gutenberg CD-ROM, it is an ongoing project
of the Carnegie Mellon University and there are 2 releases/year in Mar/Oct;
you can order it from the Walnut Creek CD-ROM outlet (info@cdrom.com). Text
includes some of the philosophers you mentioned (in Latin and English, some
of them), classic literature, historical documents, reference material - all
in plain ASCII. Current release (Oct 97) numbers 850 volumes; cost from the
Walnut Creek site is U.S. $39.95; I found it in Chapters Bookstore for just
$19.95. The Mar 97 release comprised 753 volumes ... to give you an idea.
Re: Project Gutenberg ...
I just checked and found some material by Sophocles, Plato, Virgil (in both
English and Latin), Cicero (in Latin), Commentaries by Julius Caesar, Homer
and Socrates. Nothing is comprehensive but, as time goes on, the selection
will become increasingly so. There's a lot of historical, religious, math,
and obscure (but valuable) reference texts ... complete; as well as several
kinds of literature and folktales for both children and adults.
