CH> Also, you need more than 4meg of RAM to share resources with
CH> WFWG. 8 is probably the minimum.
I don't think that there's a machine in the whole place with other than 8
megs in it, and know of at least one that's due to be expanded beyond that
(for desktop publishing use).
CH> WFWG when setup as a file/print server will need about 2.3meg
CH> of RAM just for the networking.
I'll keep that in mind...
CH> It's clean, cheap and simple and works fairly well. Windows 95
CH> is much better and faster peer to peer networking than WFWG and
CH> more stable, but WFWG is ok.
I don't think that moving to win95 is an option in this case.
CH> WFWG and W95 will connect to each other just fine, so you can
CH> mix them. Expect a 10-30% slowdown in running desktop
CH> applications from a WFWG system that is setup as a file server
CH> as compared to a Windows system that is not a file/print
CH> server.
Ok.
CH> If the guy is trying to connect 386's or slow 486's he might be
CH> disappointed in desktop performance.
They're all 486 machines, with one exception (a 386sx/16 that's due to be
upgraded). Most are at 66 MHz.
CH> WFWG is probably as simple of a network to setup as there is.
CH> Does file/printer sharing, has Mail, Chat, NetDDE, etc. If you
CH> don't know much about networking, and are trying to setup a
CH> network for someone, WFWG is as simple as it gets. You need to
CH> figure out what model number network cards they have and be
CH> sure that WFWG has drivers to support them. Should work fine if
CH> you can configure them as NE2000 cards and know the base
CH> address and IRQ of each card.
I believe that these are Artisoft cards, and have been unable to find any
device driver or config software for any of them, unless it's on one of
those Lantastic disks...
RJT> am I looking at and when would it be practical to move to
RJT> something else? (In other words, if this guy's gotta spend
RJT> some more money I need to be able to go to him and tell him
RJT> _why_ he needs to spend some more money... :-)
CH> Hee Hee, it amazes me that usually sharp intelligent people
CH> running small business's will have thousands and thousands of
CH> dollars tied up in computer hardware and software and want to
CH> do networks for a dime, usually done by some one that doesn't
CH> know much about what he is doing. I've seen cheap shitty
CH> cobbeled together lanstastic, novell lite and WFWG networks
CH> bring a small business to it's knees because of horsing around
CH> trying to do it for under 200 bucks and using old network cards
CH> they found laying around etc. False economy if you put a value
CH> on employees time and a business's productivity. There is
CH> probably a good reason that you found those network cards and
CH> two user lantastic laying around not in use at his business.
CH> Some other "consultant" evidently was there before you.
The "sales" guy used to run a Compu-Add store in the area, and he's the one
that purchased the packages...
From what I understand of the situation, he (the boss) thought that it was
quite feasible to take two of the two-user packages and use them both
together to make a four-user setup.
