Saw the first show, opening day.  It was great.  I felt I got my monies
worth within the first five minutes.  (you'll know why when you see it. 
Sit near the front and hang on!)  Gollum was also really intense.  Someone
finally did his character justice!  There were some deviations from the
books, like the Entmoot was different, their little trip with Faramir that
never happened, the...well, better stop now...Suffice to say, there was
some other differences,  but, I felt that Jackson did a good job staying in
the spirit of the book.  Some parts of a book just aren't good movie
material, and some things end up getting added so a movie appeals to a
broader audience, or to help explain things in 1 minute instead of 1 hour. 
(heh, my version would be a 36 hour mini-series! :-) I'm  really looking
forward to the next one.  If I had to draw any comparisons, I'd say it was
sorta like Empire Strikes Back, only better.  Darker, not quite as good as
the first movie, but it leaves you with an insatiable desire to see how the
next one turns out.  It's gonna be a loooong year waiting...
