I don't think you can get "rid" of that character per se unless
you perhaps replace it with NULL or something in the source.

The workaround would be to redefine its colour and/or avatar sequence eg.
to black foreground.

You can redefine it in ..\max\lang\colors.lh:

  ; File area colours

  #define COL_FILE_NEW    \x16\x01\x00

You will then need to recompile your language file, 

  maidn -nenglish english
