I was working on a Japanese porta-pack early video camera recorder
and it was a bit of a bear to get going but get it going I did.

On this newer stuff I entirely agree with you.

At least the Hitachi porta-pack video recorder was large
and though requiring extensive disassembly to repair it
was doable, this new stuff is disposable electronics :-(
