subject: Question....

-> My question has more to do with dispatching, but perhaps someone wi
-> able to answer it. Here's the situation:
->
-> While I was at work recently, a co-worker had what was later det
-> to be a stroke. Upon falling out of his chair, our Emergency Respons
-> members attended to him. Within minutes, someone from that group cal
-> and explained the situation to them making sure to mention that the e
-> in question weighed 500+ lbs. About 15 minutes later, 2 very petite
-> EMTs arrived at the plant. It was at least another 10 minutes before
-> else arrived to assist them. All total, this man lay on the floor fo
-> an hour before being transported to a hospital.(He died the following
->
-> My question: Is it normal procedure to dispatch whomever is closest?
-> Wouldn't it have saved precious minutes had the dispatcher contacted
-> department right after dispatching an ambulance?(The nearest FD to th
-> location is less than a mile away.) Obviously these people knew what
-> be dealing with before they arrived on the scene....
->
->
-> Any light anyone can shed on this will be greatly appreciated.

While a petite medic(or two) may not have been able to lift this man,
they are trained and would be able to render care untill such a time
when other help would be available. The fire dept. is always a big
help and can usually help us out tremendously and are also often
dispatched, but this all depends on who and what resources were
available at that time. Immediate O2 and stabilization of this pt. was
accomplished by the two medics untill further help was available. We
do what we can with what we have, that's all we can do.
