If everyone was so safety conscious, why didn't a mark on the ram rod make it 
obvious that the cannon had already been loaded?

     Beats me, maybe they do, now! I don't know their current procedures,
Though I shoot at this range a half dozen times a year it is about 90
minutes away and I am not a member. In any event, in the last 6 years that
I have been shooting their matches it hasn't been nearly as exciting.
Maybe they learned somthing (shooters, learn somthing? I think NOT!)

This is an old wives tail.  Ignore it...  BP will not spontaneously combust, 
unless other chemicals are mixed with it or very high tempertures are 
involved.
