NB>> Ah. A family tradition... :) So the try this year was also in Feb...
NB>> mid-summer for you... and there was still too much ice then...? Hope
NB>> you can make it to the summit this next try... :)
PH> Yes I guess you could start to call it that. I know my Dad did it with
PH> his also.
Definitely a tradition, then... perhaps also a rite of passage...? ;)
PH> Weather wise it should (and usually is) settled then. Hence why the
PH> mountain club run their guided open climb around then. But health and
PH> saftey concerns and practices have lifted a lot over the last few
PH> years. So clubs especially have to be extra vigilant to ensure they
PH> have all the bases covered. A whiff of anything not quite right and they
PH> pull the plug. So this year that's what happened. We were off and away
PH> at 5.30am climbing up and by 9am with the summitt about 45 mins away
PH> (my guess) they said sorry turn around.
I suppose it's better to be safe than sorry... :) So you're doing the
climb as part of a club's guided climb, and not just on your own...
PH> It's a good lesson for my son about perseverance and trying again when
PH> you don't first succeed etc. :)
True... And perhaps a lesson in learning to "read" the mountain... :)
