FreeBSD is that way by default with its "ports" tree. If you see
an application, check the ports tree to see if it is there, go to it's
directory in the ports tree and then use the command "make
install". I love it because it is soooo simple. It will download the
source, compile it, and then install it automatically. That being said,
you still have to watch what you are doing on occasion. I had some of my
applications "break" when I upgraded them due to my not
understanding what would change (which can be checked also!).

Anyhow, I like my FreeBSD. :)
