My mother would tell us kids when we were growing up how she had the chore
of mixing the carotene packet into the white margarine to make it look like
butter. Interestingly enough, she lived on a dairy farm, but they sold the
milk and cream to the government instead of using any themselves. This was
during the depression and WWII. I always thought it was strange for them to
sell the good dairy products all to the government and then have to use
inferior imitation dairy products for themselves.
