I bought a Telephone Line Tester at a computer show. I am pretty sure
Radio Shack sells a similar item. This tester has a short lead with a
modular plug which you can plug into the RJ-11 jack in your house and it
has LED's to indicate the line status. Green means correct wiring. Red
means reversed polarity. No light means not operational. The one you buy
may be slightly different but should be similar. I have found this to be
very useful. The cost of the tester should be $10 or less.
