BL> The existing PKT format can't send graphics, except as BL> uuencodes in 6-bit instead of 8-bit, in order to remove control BL> codes and hi-ascii. PE> Why do you want to remove hi-ascii? Don't ask me, talk to the guy who designed the uue format. BL> This not only adds processing time to the sequence, but it BL> makes the uuencode 30% larger. PE> You should do your comparisons after it is zipped. The PE> difference on a uuencoded zip file is more like 10%. I know that, but it depends on what is uuencoded. A jpeg hardly compresses at all, after uuencoding. What you say is true for a zipped gif, uuencoded and then zipped again. This may be why he used 6-bits. BL> Of course, we still have the problem of the nul terminator. PE> Which you have with your dopey idea of putting it on the PE> subject line too. Why don't you want to remove control PE> characters and hi-ascii on the subject line too? You keep accusing me a the fuckwit system already in existence; all I want to do is make it more adaptable to graphics. IMO, the nul terminator is a dickhead idea. It would make much more sense to use the Pascal-string idea and put the length of the message upfront, so that mail tossing would be faster, but I suppose you blame me for the nul, too. One thing is for sure... Fido is being left behind by the capabilities of the Internet. We're running an ascii-DOS system and the World has moved on.
