There were known bugs with the MONITOR.NLM that shipped with NW3.11,
one of which you describe ... the garbage on the screen then the crash.
There is an updated MONITOR.NLM that will bring you up to v1.76. It can
be downloaded from Netware's website. The filename is MON176.EXE. It
is a direct plug-in replacement for the shipped .NLM.
I have no problems using PCI NICs in my server, however, it is always a
good idea to check to insure that you have the latest .LAN drivers for
your NICs and check around to see if the drivers you have have caused
anyone problems. I had some interesting problems with the latest
drivers for 3Com's 100MBit PCI cards when installing them in Windows95
workstations. I had to back up a revision because the latest ones
shipping would crash the workstation to the point the system had to be
completely reloaded to fix whatever the drivers did. Simply removing
them and reinstalling didn't fix the problem. I later discovered that
there were specific notes about the driver problem on 3Com's website. I
didn't find out the particulars until I had spent some "quality time"
with a couple of workstations that had crashed.
