 You might want to try Lindsay Davis's Marcus Didius Falco
 mysteries, which must be read in order.  The first one has a
 title like SILVER PIGS (referring to a mold for molten silver).
 She is VERY funny.  I keep envisioning Bruce Campbell playing
 Falco, a Roman informer - i.e., private eye.
