QUICKEN ver 4 Windows - Create Investment Account dialog
box text modification
Perhaps it was just a mental block but it took me a long time to
figure out the meaning and implication of the phrase "Will you
track a single mutual fund in this account?" This is, of course,
one of the dialog box questions you must answer while setting up
a new investment account using Quicken 4 for Windows.
Put in simple terms and language, if you click YES, the new
account will display a share balance. This is appropriate for
variable priced stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. Answering NO to
this question will set up an account having a fixed share price
of one dollar and will display a dollar balance. This is
appropriate for Brokerage Core accounts and Money Market
accounts. You move cash in and out of cash accounts not by making
direct entries --when you buy or sell variable priced funds, you
specify the source or target by selecting from the Transfer Acct.
drop down list in the Buy or Sell dialog box.
If you would like to modify the language in the Create Investment
Account dialog box to reflect the above clarification, you will
need the Norton Utilities 8.0 Disk Editor. This is a simple and
easy operation to QW.EXE but be sure you backup your Quicken
files and copy QW.EXE from your c:\quickenw directory to a backup
diskette.
1. Exit Windows and load Norton Diskedit....
Diskedit c:\quickenw\qw.exe
2. Verify that the correct file has opened in Diskedit; the
bottom right should show C:\QUICKENW\qw.exe. The Offset and
hex address should be zero.
3. Click Tools-Find to open the Search Text dialog box.
On the ASCII line, type: Will you track
Press Enter to begin the search.
4. After searching about 91%, Diskedit will stop and highlight
the area to be modified. Hex codes are displayed at the
center of the screen while the ASCII text is shown at the
right column. Notice at the bottom right, the address is
shown. It should be: Offset 3,132,087 hex 2FCAB7. Write this
address down so you can easily return to this location.
5. At this point, you can overtype the hex codes or ASCII text.
Notice there is no flashing cursor. To select which area
to edit, move the mouse pointer over the first letter of the
ASCII text and click. The flashing cursor now appears.
6. Replace the phrase:
Will you track a single mutual fund in this account?
By overtyping:
Will this be a variable priced fund? No if $1. fixed
Be extremely careful you don't alter any other part of the
file. As you reach the end of each line, a dialog box will
appear. Examine the text you have entered and if correct,
click WRITE and continue entering text on the next line.
7. Now we are ready to modify the comments of the Quicken dialog
box. Click Tools-Find again to open the Search Text dialog
box. Enter the new search text: An investment account
Press Enter to begin the search.
8. You should now find the highlighted text at Offset 3,132,810
hex 2FCD8A. Again, write this location down incase you need
to return to this area to make corrections.
9. Replace the phrase:
An investment account that tracks a single mutual fund allows
you reconcile your account by share balance.
By overtyping:
Variable priced funds display share balance while funds fixed
at $1.00 per share display dollar balances.
Note: Quicken programmers inadvertenly left out the word "to"
between the words "you" and "reconcile".
10. Exit Norton Diskedit and load Windows and Quicken. From the
Account List, Click New-Investment. When the Create
Investment Account dialog box appears, click >>Next three
times. Verify the changes you have made are correct.
11. If for any reason something goes wrong, delete QW.EXE from
your c:\quickenw directory and restore it from your backup.
Study these directions carefully and try again. As long as
you only modify ASCII text in the EXE file, there will be
no detrimental effect whatsoever.
