My passion for digital started because of my military service where I was a
TTY operator. Being at the receiver site I could DX the bands on the night
watch with the spare receiver and TTY. I got good at it and was one of the
few that was able to make a weekly sked with a military station in in the
Netherland Antillies. I was always facinated by the mechanical wrorkings of
the teleype. When I finally got into ham radio in 1979 I got a Model 19 and
a Klienschmidt tape puncher. Made calling CQ and having tapes for contests
easy. Lots of "chad" in everthing in the room because it was not
a chadless
tape puncher. (When one of the local DXers complained that he needed
"Chad"
I mailed him some).
