I'd love to see the guys who designed the PDP-8e in my garage explain to
you how the DOS applications you have that require 64K of memory (the PDP
came with 4k) were such pigs.
A gig of memory is not that much, my average data working set is probably
close to a half gig just for a simple video editing session (the video is
350gig all by itself). You can't use a slide control to find a point in a
45 minute video unless the whole thing is in memory.
So, if you want to play zork, fine you can complain about how pigware slows
a system down, for me I think the current crop of games are the correct way
to use a 3ghz P4, it's kind of a waste to use such a machine for zork..
(and that goes for applications as well as games)
I hope you understand the point, I'm not defending careless programming
that chews up memory for no reason, but I am saying there are plenty of
uses today which require huge amounts of memory.
