Hello All!
Some of you know that I am very excited about Robert Jung's (ARJ) new JAR
compressor fow DOS and for Windows 95 / NT. Take a close look at the results
below; you might be VERY suprised with the results :-)
Cheers, Hans

Hello Dale!
Here's something interesting about the new JAR (Windows 95/NT) and how it
works:
a) here are the files I archived:
BOFAQ601 TXT 13,206 01-01-96 12:00a
BOFAQ602 TXT 13,162 02-01-96 12:00a
BOFAQ603 TXT 13,162 03-01-96 12:00a
BOFAQ604 TXT 13,162 04-01-96 12:00a
BOFAQ605 TXT 13,162 05-01-96 12:00a
BOFAQ606 TXT 14,707 06-01-96 12:00a
BOFAQ607 TXT 16,891 07-01-96 12:00a
BOFAQ608 TXT 16,937 08-01-96 12:00a
BOFAQ609 TXT 16,937 09-01-96 12:00a
BOFAQ610 TXT 16,937 10-01-96 12:00a
BOFAQ611 TXT 16,937 11-01-96 12:00a
BOFAQ612 TXT 16,937 12-01-96 12:00a
12 file(s) 182,137 bytes
b) here are the above files backed up with ARJ using MAXIMUM compression:
BOFAQ_96 ARJ 62,967 12-01-96 12:00a
c) next the same files compressed with JAR; files added *one* at a time:
BOFAQ_96 JAR 52,183 02-15-97 2:42a
d) finally, now you see the result of the "solid" archiving method, next
comes all of the above *.txt files archived in one run:
BOFAQ_96 JAR 6,393 12-01-96 12:00a
This is utterly INCREDIBLE and shows why I have gone crazy over JAR :-)
90% smaller than ARJ with MAXIMUM compression!!! Shows you what the larger
compression window used by solid archivers can do :-)
Just to be fair, here are some other comparisons; first another "solid"
archiver, RAR. It's the next-best thing to JAR.
BOFAQ_96 RAR 8,692 12-01-96 12:00a
BOFAQ_96 ZIP 63,022 12-01-96 12:00a
BOFAQ_96 LZH 63,396 02-15-97 3:03a
Note that RAR, ARJ and PKZip were set for MAXIMUM compression; JAR and
LHA/LZH were set for NORMAL compression!!!
JAR (normal) 6,393 and PKZip (maximum) 63,022 -- these are HUGE differences
:-)))
Cheers, Hans
