One could use lower value RL but the culprit seems to me the simplistic
internal common emitter output configuration. There is a lot of
capacitance multiplication reflected to the input of a C-E stage. Only a
lot of current pumping can overcome that large input Cequ value. It
would have taken a different type of driver to make it faster like the
LM311.
