Multiboot one of the MS operating systems, or get a cheap 486. Linux doesn't
need vast amounts of either harddisk or memory. 8mb would probably be fine in
a masquerading router.
IP Masquerading (i.e renumbering) is generally thought of as a better option
when you can trust the hosts on the local network.
Linux is also free, and of course at some time you're probably going to want
to run internet servers - common Linux distributions all have http, ftp,
telnet and endless servers built in, plus IRC, etc downloadable from your
nearest sunsite.unc.edu mirror.
You won't regret it. Anyway, I have great fun playing around with my Linux
machines :-)
